FAQ
How will I be paid? KBAL pays all pilots a monthly base pay that they receive each month and a daily pay for each day on base.
Where do I live? The standard KBAL Bases are Calgary, and Edmonton. Pilots on the twin otter and/or on overseas contract can be based in most major cities.
Do you pay for medicals? KBAL does not pay for pilot medicals unless they are specialized for a specific contract.
Do you pay for charts? KBAL will only supply charts for operations outside of Canada. In Canada, pilots must supply their own current VFR and IFR charts.
What per-diems do I get? Per diems will vary from base to base, but they are intended to provide enough money to properly eat.
Where will I be based? Where a pilot will be bases will vary with the requirement of the company. Any issues regarding this should be dealt with prior to the start of employment.
Is there a clothing allowance? The company provide 150$ per year for a clothing allowance.
Will I get company clothing? You may purchase company clothing up to the yearly rate after which it will be the pilots cost.
What will my schedule be like? KBAL strives to maintain a fixed schedule (Standard is 3 weeks in – 3 weeks out, but we also use 2 week rotations when required. Overseas will use anywhere from 4 week to 3 month tours). These rotation lengths may change depending on conditions and training requirements.
Where will I live when on rotation? Most northern bases have 2 or 3 bedroom apartments that are shared with flight crew. Overseas either apartments or hotels are used depending on availability.
Do I get paid for training? No.
Do I qualify for vacation pay? KBAL uses an averaging system for the year. If you work enough days you will qualify for vacation pay, however, most pilots will not.
How much holiday time am I given? The pilots are given 4 weeks per year.
What are the health benefits like? Standard extended health, life insurance, and dental coverage. The company pays for half the premium and the employee pays for the other half.
When will I get my first raise? Six months or one year is the normal increase internal, depending on the starting wage.
What are the upgrade requirements? KBAL has a minimum 2500 hour and ATPL requirement.
Will I need to have a valid passport/red pass? Yes, or the ability to get one.
